Cuban Hoyo Primaveras Launching Virtually in Hong Kong – Cigar Aficionado
According to the Chinese zodiac, 2021 marks the Year of the Ox, and there’s a Cuban cigar made especially to commemorate the Chinese New Year, the Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras. This new cigar will fittingly get its global release in Hong Kong, in a virtual launch party engineered for today’s pandemic-ridden times.
Next Wednesday, on January 13, the cigar will be unveiled via a virtual party hosted by Pacific Cigar Co. Ltd., the Habanos distributor for most of southeast Asia. The next day, the Primaveras will go on sale throughout the Asia Pacific region.
Previewed at last year’s Habanos Festival, the Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras cigars come in richly enameled 18-count boxes with words “Year of the Ox” printed prominently on the lid. The cigar measures 6 5/8 inches by 48 ring gauge, a size known as Hermosos No. 1 in Cuban cigar factories.
The Primaveras are slated to retail for HK$685 per cigar, or about $88.35 each. There’s no official word on when the rest of the world will start to see the Primaveras, but only 8,888 boxes were produced. Prices will vary from country to country.
Virtual events such as this seem to be the trend during the time of Covid. Both the Ramon Allones Allones No. 2 and the H. Upmann Connossieur No. 2 were released virtually as well.
This is the second Cuban cigar to officially celebrate the Chinese New Year and its zodiacal animal, following last year’s Romeo y Julieta Maravillas 8 for Year of the Rat. With the Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras, Habanos now joins other cigar brands that acknowledge the Year of the Ox, including Plasencia Cigars, Davidoff and Great Wall.
